A Morning with Rose City Bluff Restoration
This past Sunday, the RBFM team had the pleasure of volunteering with the Rose City Bluff Restoration - a group of neighborhood volunteers working to restore the native ecological system along the Rose City Bluff, a half mile long slope on the north edge of the Rose City Golf Course.
The rain held off and it was a beautiful morning to be outside in the neighborhood! Suzanne, Joe, Reed, and some other wonderful neighborhoods dedicate their time every Sunday morning to caring for this space and have been doing so for around a decade. They've managed countless invasives, planted hundreds of native plants, collected thousands of seeds, and probably even more golf balls!
We enjoyed a tour of the bluff including the main planting sites and a thorough history of the bluff and its evolution. Afterwards, we got to work clipping back a large thicket of blackberry and it's true what they say - many hands make light work! It took just about an hour for the entire hillside to be cleared, ready for the roots to be dug out as best as possible, covered in a thick layer of woodchips, and eventually planted with natives. Managing invasive blackberry is no easy feat but regular maintenance like this is key!
We thoroughly enjoyed spending our Sunday morning this way and certainly plan to do it again in the future! To learn more about the important work that Rose City Bluff Restoration is doing, come see them at our next fall market on November 23rd! If you couldn't make it this time but want to volunteer with them, they meet every Sunday at 9:30 at NE 62nd and Sacramento.
Plus, volunteering with other groups doing good in our community is something that we'd like to start doing more regularly, so keep an eye our for more opportunities to join us!
Thanks again for having us Rose City Bluff Restoration!
