Established in 2019, Rocky Butte Farmers Market's (RBFM) is a grassroots neighborhood farmers market that was started by neighbors living in the Roseway and Madison South neighborhoods. Our mission is to provide NE Portland, Oregon residents with access to affordable, seasonal, locally grown foods and artisan products with a primary goal of lowering barriers to market participation for beginning and under-represented vendors. RBFM exists to strengthen connections within our diverse community by providing a safe, welcoming, fun, educational, and inclusive community gathering space.
The Rocky Butte Farmers Market has been steadily growing since it was established in 2019. During our 2024 season, our market provided the opportunity for roughly $100,000 to stay within the local economy, benefitting local farms and small businesses. Our main season hosts weekly markets that feel like block parties where friends, families, and pets can all celebrate the joys of our vibrant community. But building a market like this doesn’t happen on its own! Neighbors and our staff have always worked together to not only help strengthen a more sustainable local food system, but to build climate and community resilience for all of us.
If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, consider joining us! We are seeking community minded people who are looking for ways to have an impact through volunteerism to join our board. Being a board member could allow you to share the skills or connections you already have in a way that helps support our neighborhood, and it offers an opportunity to build new skills such as budgeting, marketing, nonprofit administration, and executive leadership. Our board is highly involved in the market, so if you’ve ever had ideas about how to make the market better, now is your chance to make those a reality!

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meetings. Our board meets once per month on Wednesdays for 1.5 hours, and all board members are asked to join either the fundraising or marketing subcommittee which meet seasonally.
- Fundraising. Fundraising for a nonprofit like ours is essential to keeping the market going, so board members all support one another in activities such as grant writing, sponsorship seeking, and fundraiser event planning. However, board members do not have any individual financial obligation to the organization.
- Volunteer hours. All board members volunteer at a minimum of one market per month during the market season. If this could be an issue for you, talk to us! There may be an opportunity to flex additional fundraising time or other activities instead of volunteering at summer markets.
- Leadership. Some board members will have the opportunity to accept officer roles. These roles offer some additional leadership opportunities for those who want to steer the direction of the organization.
